Joint Commission Removes “Licensed Independent Practitioner” Term From Restraint and Seclusion Standards

Effective March 15, Joint Commission is removing the term “licensed independent practitioner” (LIP) from hospital restraint and seclusion standards, clarifying that PAs are qualified to order restraint or seclusion and removing a barrier to patient safety in hospitals.

U.S. health centers are hiring PAs and NPs at a higher rate than physicians, according to research released by the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC). NACHC’s 2020 Chartbook reported that health centers employ more PAs, NPs, and CNMs than physicians.
