Your Guide to Type 1 Diabetes Screening and Early Intervention

New Toolkit Highlights the Benefits of Early Screening and Detection

October 21, 2025

In the United States, two million people have type 1 diabetes (T1D), including about 304,000 children and adolescents. While there is no cure for T1D, patients benefit from early detection and diagnosis, which allows them to begin a care plan to manage their T1D. As frontline providers treating patients across the full spectrum of care, physician associates are uniquely positioned to aid in early detection of T1D.

Created with support from Sanofi, AAPA’s new Type 1 Diabetes Toolkit is designed to help both patients and providers understand who is at risk for T1D, the benefits of early screening and detection, and what follows diagnosis.

Resources for Providers
The toolkit includes essential materials designed for healthcare providers. Through infographics, fact sheets, videos, and more, refresh your knowledge on T1D screening, the stages of T1D, and preventive treatment options. Find the latest standards of care and research, as well as information designed specifically for your patients.

Educating Patients and Caregivers
As you help patients understand their risk for T1D, the benefits of early screening and detection, and what they can expect after receiving a diagnosis, they may benefit from exploring additional resources. The toolkit includes videos, fact sheets, and guides developed specifically for patients and their caregivers as they navigate T1D. School personnel can also utilize the toolkit to explore training and support materials that will help children manage T1D in the classroom.

The Type 1 Diabetes Toolkit is now available in AAPA’s Clinical Resource Library.
