AAPA Releases Statement on the Urgent Need to Strengthen Protections for the Healthcare Workforce

March 3, 2025

American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) President and Chair of the Board of Directors Jason Prevelige, DMSc, MBA, PA-C, DFAAPA, released the following statement in response to the recent episodes of violence at Palms West Hospital and UPMC Memorial Hospital.

“The recent events at Palms West Hospital and UPMC Memorial Hospital are a painful reminder of the life-threatening dangers that can arise at any moment in medical settings. No one should fear for their safety while dedicating their life to caring for others. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence.

Violence against healthcare workers is an escalating crisis. AAPA research has found that 1 in 3 PAs have been threatened with physical harm by patients; this is unacceptable. We owe it to every provider, staff member, and patient to ensure that medical settings remain places of healing.

In the wake of this tragedy, we must acknowledge the responsibility we all share in ensuring the safety of our healthcare workforce. Hospitals, clinics, and healthcare organizations must take immediate, concrete steps to enhance security, strengthen protocols, and foster a culture where safety is as much a priority as patient care. Likewise, lawmakers have a role to play in advancing policies that protect those who dedicate their lives to healing others. Whether through improved training, increased access to mental health services, workplace protections, stronger enforcement measures, or better reporting systems, we must act to reduce the risks our healthcare teams face every day.

The PA profession stands with our colleagues across the healthcare community as we mourn these tragedies and recommit to creating safer environments for all.”
