In 2020, the Physician Associate Foundation (PAF) established the Joyce Nichols Memorial Scholarship with a lead gift from emergency medicine PA, Brian Palm. The scholarship honors the life and legacy of Joyce Nichols, the first woman to become a PA and a trailblazer in the PA profession.

Since its creation, the Joyce Nichols Memorial Scholarship has awarded financial support to nearly 40 PA students across the country, each one carrying forward the principles Nichols championed throughout her life and career.
In 2025, the PAF Board of Trustees established a permanent endowment for the scholarship, ensuring it will continue to grow in impact and sustainability for generations to come. This scholarship, along with other PAF giving opportunities, is also supported by donor contributions. By investing in this and other scholarship funds, donors are investing in students who will go on to strengthen the PA profession and transform healthcare.

More than just a scholarship
From the beginning, the Joyce Nichols Memorial Scholarship has been about more than just easing financial burdens. The scholarship was designed to recognize Black or African American PA students who not only excel academically, but who also demonstrate a commitment to service, leadership, and patient-centered care. Over the past five years, recipients have consistently reflected those ideals, using the support they received to stay grounded in their purpose.

“The goal of every PA student is to succeed and serve, and scholarships like this play a monumental role in helping students reach that goal—benefiting not only the students themselves but the future of the profession as a whole,” said 2023 recipient Amari Oliver, MMSc, PA-C, now a practicing PA in Atlanta, Georgia.
Courtney Philpot, DMS, MSPAS, PA-C, a 2022 recipient, spoke movingly about what it meant to receive a scholarship honoring the first African American woman to practice as a PA. “As a woman of color myself, receiving a scholarship in her name was especially meaningful,” Philpot said. “Her courage, resilience, and leadership continue to inspire me as I grow in my PA career, and I hope to honor her impact by continuing her commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.” For recipients like Philpot, who is now practicing in Dallas, Texas, the scholarship is a reminder that they are part of a larger legacy of representation in medicine.

That sense of connection to something greater than oneself is a recurring theme among recipients. Thomas Randle, a 2025 recipient and second year PA student at Drexel University, described how the scholarship provided reassurance during one of the most demanding periods of PA school. “This award felt like a reminder that others believe in my potential in healthcare and treating future patients. It eased some of the financial strain that comes with pursuing my education and allowed me to focus more on my clinical training rather than worrying about expenses,” Randle said. “More importantly, it connected me to a legacy of perseverance, advocacy, and leadership that I aspire to carry forward in my career.”
An honor that stays with students well into their careers
For earlier recipients of the scholarship, like Cherish Hannah, MSPAS, PA-C, its influence has extended well beyond graduation and into clinical practice. “Receiving the Joyce Nichols Memorial Scholarship reminded me that I was not alone in this journey and that my commitment to advocating for underserved patients was valued,” she said.

Hannah received the Joyce Nichols Memorial Scholarship in 2021 and is now a practicing PA in Maryland. “[The scholarship] pushed me to keep moving forward and gave me a sense of responsibility to lead, educate, and advocate. This is something that has stayed with me now that I am practicing as a PA-C.” Her experience underscores how the scholarship’s impact does not end when tuition is paid—it continues in exam rooms, clinics, and communities where recipients put their values into action. “I feel honored to carry forward even a small part of her legacy by caring for my patients and encouraging future generations to pursue careers in medicine, regardless of the obstacles they may face,” Hannah said.
Recipients of the Joyce Nichols Memorial Scholarship have gone on to serve diverse populations, advocate for underserved communities, and uphold the highest standards of patient care. They represent a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and aspirations, yet are united by a shared commitment to service and excellence. The fifth anniversary of the Joyce Nichols Memorial Scholarship is an opportunity to honor Joyce Nichols’ life and legacy, and to celebrate the achievements of the remarkable PA students who have received this scholarship. Each recipient—past, present, and future—carries forward a piece of that legacy through their studies, clinical practice, and dedication to their patients and communities.
As the scholarship moves into its next chapter, its growing community of recipients stands as proof that the legacy of one individual can change countless lives.
