AAPA Calls on AMA to Put a Stop to Campaign Against PAs

July 31, 2024

The AAPA has sent a letter to the American Medical Association (AMA), confronting its unjust and harmful attacks on PAs and other healthcare providers and calling on the AMA to cease its divisive “scope creep” campaign.

Key Excerpts from the Letter:

  • On the Role of PAs: “PAs play an indispensable role in addressing healthcare disparities and ensuring equitable access to care. Our rigorous training and commitment to lifelong learning enable us to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care across every medical specialty.”
  • On AMA’s Obstruction to Healthcare Progress: “In 2023 alone, the AMA obstructed more than 100 bills aimed at expanding access to care and modernizing healthcare laws. This obstructionism is not merely a setback but a significant barrier to addressing the pressing challenges within our healthcare delivery system.”
  • On the “Scope Creep” Campaign: “The AMA’s campaign against ‘scope creep’ is a thinly veiled effort to maintain outdated practices rather than confronting the urgent issues we face. This unfounded campaign perpetuates division and undermines our collective ability to provide high-quality care.”
  • On Misleading Claims: “Claims made by the AMA about PAs and other healthcare providers have been misleading and damaging. For instance, the assertion that modernized healthcare practice laws are harmful to patients is disproved by recent studies showing no increase in malpractice payments in states with more permissive PA practice environments.”
