‘Fulfilling a need’: PA on life in a rural health clinic

Ed Friedmann, a physician assistant, says he takes great satisfaction in running his rural health clinic — Redfield Medical Clinic — the sole one of its kind in Redfield, Iowa. He has been seeing patients in the small town for about 40 years, tending to lacerations, colds, sore throats, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes.

In honor of PA Week 2025, we spoke with Ed Friedmann, PA-C, the administrator and owner of Redfield Medical Clinic, a federally certified rural health clinic in Redfield, Iowa, a town with a population of 731. PA Friedmann and his wife, retired clinician Elizabeth (Libby) Coyte, PA-C, opened their clinic in 1988 as a certified independent Rural Health Clinic (RHC).
