What is the Student Academy BOD?

All AAPA student members are members of the Student Academy, which represents the unique views of PA students within AAPA. Working closely with the Assembly of Representatives (AOR), Student Delegates to the HOD and Student Societies from PA programs across the country, the Student Academy Board of Directors provides direction for the work of the Student Academy in alignment with the AAPA Five-Year Strategic Plan.

There are ten (10) open Student Academy Board positions with terms starting July 1, 2021:

  • President-elect: two-year term – one year as President-elect, one year as Student Academy President/AAPA Student Director on AAPA’s Board of Directors
  • Chief Delegate – one-year term
  • Director of Diversity and Outreach – one-year term
  • Director of Student Communications – one-year term
  • Regional Directors (6) – one-year terms

Position Descriptions

President-elect

This is a two-year position that transitions in the second year to Student Academy President/AAPA Student Director on AAPA’s Board of Directors. Candidates must be due to graduate after September 30, 2021 to be eligible for this position.

Following are the duties of the President-elect:

  • Communicate regularly with the Student Academy President.
  • With the president, direct the orientation of the newly elected Student Academy Board of Directors at Conference.
  • With the President, lead the AOR meeting and the new student leader orientation at Conference.
  • Lead the Student Academy Board in the absence of the President.

President/AAPA Student Director

The Student Academy President acts as the official spokesperson of the Student Academy and serves simultaneously on the AAPA Board of Directors with full voting privileges.

Following are duties of the President:

  • Lead board meetings of the Student Academy.
  • Appoint Student Board Committees.
  • Serve on AAPA Board Committee(s) as assigned by the AAPA President.
  • Report to the AAPA Board of Directors about Student Academy activities and initiatives.

Chief Delegate of the Student HOD Delegation

Candidates must have previous HOD experience to be eligible for this position. Following are the duties of the Student Chief Delegate:

  • Lead the student delegation to AAPA’s House of Delegates (HOD).
  • Conduct conference calls with the student HOD delegation to discuss student-focused resolutions and/or policy papers.
  • Work with student HOD delegation to prepare for informed testimony in the HOD and ensure student interests are being represented in deliberations.
  • Work with student HOD delegation and advisers to author HOD resolutions.
  • Share relevant HOD information with the Student Academy Board.

Director of Diversity and Outreach

Following are the duties of the Director of Diversity and Outreach:

  • Act as a point of contact to Diversity Chairs at each student society.
  • Raise awareness of AAPA’s ongoing diversity initiatives.
  • Work with Regional Directors and Director of Communications to provide PA students with current information.
  • Promote student diversity, interprofessional networking, and PA student presence within the profession.
  • Maintain communication with organizations that also have student members.
  • Assist on various projects as needed.
  • Serve as chair or board representative to one of the Student Board Committees.

Director of Student Communications

Following are the duties of the Director of Student Communications:

  • Create relevant social media posts for the Student Academy Facebook page and Twitter account in collaboration with the Student Academy Staff Adviser.
  • Work with Student Academy Staff Adviser to develop an editorial content calendar for student channels.
  • Serve as chair or board representative to one of the Student Board Committees.

Regional Directors: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, North Central, South Central, West

A list of states within each region can be found here. Following are the duties of the Regional Directors:

  • Serve as liaison between Student Academy leadership and respective regional programs.
  • Promote student society registration in respective region.
  • Bring achievements, ideas, and issues from respective region to the attention of the Student Academy Board for discussion.
  • Bring AAPA student-relevant products, information, and resources to respective regions.
  • Participate in SAR conference calls.
  • Serve as chair or board representative to one of the Student Board Committees.
Eligibility and Qualifications

Eligibility and Qualifications

  • Any AAPA student member in good academic standing who is currently attending an accredited/provisionally accredited PA program may run for a position on the Student Academy Board of Directors.
  • The President-elect candidates must be graduating after September 30, 2021.
  • The Chief Delegate of the student HOD delegation position requires previous HOD experience.

Student Academy BOD Meetings

For planning purposes, candidates should be prepared to participate in monthly conference calls and travel to Alexandria, VA for one in-person board meeting in Fall 2021, if COVID safety protocols permit. Attendance at the 2022 AAPA Conference (May 21-25, 2022) in Indianapolis, IN is also required. Reasonable travel expenses are covered by AAPA.

The offices of President-elect, Director of Diversity & Outreach and Director of Student Communications will be elected by credentialed members of the AOR and Student Board members.

Regional Directors will be elected by credentialed AOR representatives and Student Board Members from within their specific region.

The Chief Delegate will be elected by Student Board members, credentialed AOR representatives, and credentialed student members of the HOD.
