Lessons from the 2025 Pre-PA Virtual Mixer
Each year, more than 30,000 applications are submitted to physician associate programs across the nation. Many applicants demonstrate unique experiences and skills that make them stand out. However, even the most competitive applicants should consider what makes their application unique and hone the story they share with prospective PA schools.
On November 5, AAPA hosted the 2025 Pre-PA Virtual Mixer, which connected future PA students with experienced AAPA members to discuss ways to overcome the common obstacles that pre-PAs experience. During the virtual mixer, cohosts Yasmine Affes, PA-C and student Laura Hassan presented their tips for building your pre-PA brand and using it to your advantage.

Here are two tips that Yasmine and Laura suggest for aspiring PAs to stand out in your applications.
- Perfect your elevator pitch. Make an instant connection with a potential mentor by learning to market yourself effectively. PA school admissions professionals and future employers will want to know what led you to pursue the PA career and the path you chose to get here. This is reflected in your experiences, skills, and values. Prepare a 30-60 second summary that includes who you are, your value proposition, and a call to action. Here is a helpful template to plug and play your pitch:Hi, I’m [name]. I’m a pre-PA drawn to the PA profession because [why PA]. I’ve built [experience 1] which strengthened my [specific skill learned]. I’ve also [experience 2] where I learned [something that connects to patient care or teamwork]. I value [value 1] and [value 2], which I think align with how PAs approach care. I’d love to [your ask].
- Polish your social media profiles. Don’t let your online footprint interfere with your chances of program acceptance. Instead, avoid common mistakes and make quick improvements to your online profile. Go a step further and professionalize your social media into an extension of your application. Show admissions committees why you’re the ideal candidate by using a professional headshot, highlighting your achievements, and building your resume.
Apply your new skills and brand as you meet mentors, interview for PA programs, and secure professional roles. Your pre-PA brand and your social media presence will help you build valuable connections, stand out in interviews, and propel your career as a PA. With thoughtful branding, you can level up your PA journey and overcome any obstacle!
