In addition to the national certification maintenance requirements governed by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), state laws and regulations also outline PA licensing and certification requirements.
In some states, continuing medical education requirements specify the subject matter a CME courses must cover in order for the PA to satisfy CME requirements.
Forty seven states (in this case the District of Columbia is considered a state) require CME to renew a state license. Twenty of those states require the completion of CME in a specific topic. A state may require all PAs to complete courses on the specified topic, or may only require course completion if the PA will perform a specific task, i.e., prescribe controlled substances.
