New Adult Hypertension Guidelines Released

The American Academy of PAs (AAPA), the American Heart Association (AHA), American College of Cardiology (ACC), and several other health organizations released new prevention, diagnosis and treatment guidelines that redefine high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

PA LTC Jones Practices Protective Medicine at the White House

U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel James Jones, PA, has experienced several dramatic medical moments in his near-decade at the White House. He has also visited 72 countries and every U.S. state in his job, which entails caring for the president, vice president, Cabinet secretaries, key White House personnel, some of their families and tourists visiting the building.

PA Executive: Javier Esquivel-Acosta

However, with the right background and determination, many PAs have shown they, too, have what it takes to be successful in those positions. One prime example is PA Javier Esquivel-Acosta, who for several years served as associate medical director at the Foothill Community Health Center (FCHC) in San Jose, Calif. The center oversees a number of local health clinics throughout the area.

American Academy of PAs Announces 2018 Conference General Session Speaker

AAPA announced today its general session speaker for AAPA Conference 2018. Jeff Evans, PA, mountaineer, adventurer, and author, will speak to attendees on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Evans’ speech, titled “MountainVision: Lessons Beyond the Summit,” will draw from his experiences delivering emergency medical care on the front lines in Mosul, Iraq; guiding a blind climber to the summit of Mount Everest; co-founding an expedition-based program for injured U.S. veterans; and serving as the chief medic for a helicopter-based search and rescue team on Mount Everest. Key themes will include servant leadership, teamwork, commitment, and handling adversity.

Providing Strength in the Wake of Trauma

Self-defense instructor Katie Thompson worked as an emergency medical technician for several years in South Central Los Angeles, but she always felt she needed to do more. She began shadowing PAs and quickly realized it was the perfect career for her. Soon after graduating from MEDEX Northwest, the PA program at the University of Washington, Thompson accepted a position as a forensic examiner at the Center for Assault Treatment Services (CATS) in Van Nuys, Calif.

Breaking Ground as Hawaii’s First PA in Rheumatology

Christina Starks, PA-C, saw a job listing on Craigslist in 2016 for a PA at a rheumatology private practice in Honolulu. The job turned out to be a perfect fit. She became the first PA in rheumatology in the state of Hawaii. Since then, Starks has made an impact on both the profession and her patients.
