Effective leaders must have a working knowledge of the budget process. Budget development is one of the core responsibilities of any Board. The responsibility of developing the budget is usually shared between the leadership and staff. However, even if the organization's staff develops and presents the budget to the leadership, ultimately it is the Board's responsibility.  This module is designed to take you through the basics of the budget development process and can serve as a blueprint for the budget development process for any organization in which you participate.

Length of Module
Reviewing the module should take approximately 30 minutes. We recommend that you take the budget template and adapt it to any organization in which you participate. If your organization already has a budget process in place, use this module as a benchmark against which to review your current process for efficiency and effectiveness.

Cost
The module is free. We recommend that you continue your education by reviewing the bibliography and visiting other web sites that may have additional information on the budget process.
