Congratulations on your career choice, and welcome to what is sure to be an exciting, and extremely hectic, educational experience. Whether you have just begun your Physician Assistant education or are on your final rotations, you are an integral part of your program and your class. Each class has a dynamic all its own, a sense of individuality and identity. Nonetheless, remember that what is happening at your program, more often than not, is happening at other programs.
That is where the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (SAAPA) plays such a vital role in representing YOU! The Student Academy is an organization that represents the views and concerns of all PA students.
How does the Student Academy do this?
By having a voice in AAPA affairs. A student holds a full voting position on the AAPA Board of Directors and Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) Board of Directors. Students are also represented on the PA Foundation Board of Trustees and the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). There is a separate student delegation to the House of Delegates, the AAPA legislative body. In addition, the Student Academy has its own Board of Directors and legislative body, the Assembly of Representatives.
Why a Student Academy?
Because while your program may educate you to be knowledgeable and competent medical practitioners, there is an equal need to educate PA students to be professionals. The Student Academy focuses on helping students develop a sense of the profession's character, a view of where our profession should go, and how we should get there.
Become a part of your professional organization!
Get involved! Attend constituent chapter meetings, meet practicing PAs in your state, learn the issues and concerns of your state PAs. Attend the Annual PA Conference, and take a role in the Student Assembly of Representatives or the House of Delegates, to learn about the policies and activities of Physician Assistants nationwide.
What's next?
Take a look at the many opportunities available to you. Apply for student membership using the on-line form or document #421 from the Academy's Fast Fax system. As soon as we process it you'll begin to enjoy the benefits of AAPA student membership. If you have any questions, call 703/836-2272, ext. 3350. We're waiting to hear from you!
