Candidate Keavey Talks Health Reform

connectcandidates2010How would you advocate for AAPA to ensure PAs remain in the forefront of this current health care reform environment?

keavey_resizedSandra Keavey, MPAS, PA-C, DFAAPA

"With the recent election of a Republican senator in the state of Massachusetts the status of health care reform is uncertain to say the least. Whether the moment for reform has been lost or simply headed down a new path is unknown. Will Congress start from scratch or abandon reform and continue business as usual?
Regardless the PA profession must continue to advocate for our patients and our profession. How? The same as always. We need to continue our dialogue with state and congressional representatives as a group and as individuals to continue or re-ignite health care reform. With our professional colleagues we must continue to work together to improve access to care, remove disparities and work to prevent the opportunity for meaningful reform from dying from political infighting.
In America the political process is how change occurs. We must continue to be part of the squeaky wheel that advocates for change that increases access to care and decreases barriers to practice. Send examples to your legislative representatives of situations that have resulted in a decreased access to care for a patient or provide a barrier to your ability to practice. Give them ammunition to use to advocate on our and our patients behalf. Stay aware of what your state licensing and regulatory boards are proposing that might affect your ability to care for patients.

The fight for health care reform is lost if WE abandon our voice and quit pursuing the goal of health care for all."

As the nation focuses on health care reform, PA Pro NOW dedicated an entire week to this issue. Each AAPA General Election candidate (in alphabetical order by office) will respond to the health care reform question shown above.

  1. Well you certainly sound like a socialist. The problem I have with your view points are you feel the government should solve the individual's problems, when in fact the founders of our country felt it more important that Humanity solved human problems. Read a little of the writings from Samuel Adams.
  2. I have to agree with Dennis’ response that Ms. Keavey’s remarks are obviously pro-democrat and she appears to be for the HCR debacle floating in Congress. “The United States now has a president with a stated agenda to reform health care.” (Sandra Keavey Platform statement). How does complaining to a senator or representative about how one of our patients had problems with the system help the PA profession as a whole? While it may bring more attention to the debate and outline problems inherent within the system, where and how does this advocate the PA profession?
  3. Advocating for the PA profession in my opinion means furthering our ability to care for our patients, branching out in new fields of medicine and research, and continue to optimize reimbursements for PAs. Cuts in Medicare and Medicaid will result in cuts in reimbursement, which will in turn result in decreased compensations for our supervising physicians. Once our supervising physicians, hospitals, groups see cuts in their income, PAs’ salaries will get cut and they will hire less PAs. How does that advocate for our profession?
  4. While I agree that there are many flaws in the current system and there is significant room for improvement, the current bill in Congress is NOT the answer to all our problems and prayers and will not promote the PA profession. Therefore, I will not be voting for Ms. Keavey as she appears to be a proponent of the HCR bill. Do not allow the current administration to buy the profession off for votes as they have many others; unions, “Louisiana Purchase”, Court of Appeals seat, etc.
