AAPA President Stephen Hanson and six other PAs accepted a White House invitation to appear at an event in which the President unveiled his revised health reform plan. Hanson and representatives from other clinician groups appeared on stage with the President as he made his remarks. Six other PAs were seated in the audience during the address, in which President Obama asked Congress to take an up-or-down vote on health care reform in the next few weeks.

After the event, Hanson gave his thoughts on the experience.

PA Pro NOW: What does it mean to you that PAs were invited by the White House to this health reform event?

Hanson: It was an important moment in PA history to be included in the announcement on HCR. It recognizes the important contribution that PAs make in the health care system, and it signals the President's commitment toward including PAs in HCR.

PA Pro NOW: As you listened to the President’s remarks, were there any key components in the revised plan that will affect PAs?

Hanson: There were none other than he specifically recognized PAs three times during his remarks. His plan specifically mentions PAs under workforce, and he and his staff have expressed a commitment to us to make sure PAs are included in any HCR pushed by the administration.

  1. Hi Steve, I was elated when I heard President Obama's speeh that included PAs as providers! Now that I see your picture in your white jacket, I know we did the right thing selecting you for the special election for president. Keep up the good work! We'll need Health Care Reform before we make significant strides in health care delivery in Puerto Rico. Best wishes, Maryann Ramos, MPH, PA-C Legislative Chair, PALH Member, Nom Com
  2. I would not stand on the same stage as that dictator Obama. IF this passes it is a dark day for the country.
  3. Shame on any person in the medical industry that supports the government on taking steps towards universal health services in the USA.
  4. I support any program that improves access to care for our patients. We are the only industrialized nation that does not provide health care for all it citizens. We are 13th in infant mortality. Obviously our system has some flaws. Let's continue to monitor the legislation that has been passed and make sure it accomplishes the goal of improving health care delivery and access. Now is NOT the time to stop being vocal. If you did not support this legislation then work to change what we have to what you want, what you think benefits our pateints. Don't give up.
  5. Do you realize the American's will be FORCED to PURCHASE government insurance (btw is Medicaid). Does that sound constitutional to you? Answer me this, why don’t these changes take effect for 4 years? It’s because Obama will be running for re-election in three. They will pay for this by cutting Medicare reimbursement by 21% this October and raising taxes on the working class. Further, 36% (Medicus in NEJM) of doctors surveyed said they would quit or retire if this bill passes. Who will be left to supervise? This bill does nothing to stop inflation of insurance premiums. If your employer can’t afford to provide you with private insurance, then you will be forced to go on Medicaid. Is that really what you want? Here’s a link to the bill, HR 3590. Just read the title of the bill as passed by the Senate. If that’s not a “bait and switch” I don’t know what is. http://democrats.senate.gov/reform/patient-protection-affordable-care-act-as-passed.pdf
