AAPA Endorses Tobacco Cessation GuidelinesAAPA joined other national organizations in endorsing new Public Health Service-sponsored guidelines on Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: 2008 Update. AAPA encourages PAs in all specialties and all patient care settings to provide effective tobacco cessation interventions to patients.
VA PA Director Bill Headed for the House FloorHouse panel approves bipartisan bill to create a full-time director of PA services at the Veterans Health Administration in Washington, D.C. AAPA President Greg Bennett applauded the work of Representatives Phil Hare (D-Ill.) and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Veterans Affairs PA Association, and staff. The full House may vote on the legislation before the end of May.
Advanced Trauma Life Support Cards for PAsStarting in October 2008, PAs will receive cards for completing the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course offered by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Between now and this fall, ACS will work to restructure the rules, design the cards, and inform ATLS course managers of the new policy. Until then, PAs will continue to receive letters indicating that they have attended the course. AAPA liaisons to the ACS have worked for many years to achieve this goal. Dan Vetrosky, PA-C, M.Ed., current Academy liaison to ACS, congratulated all those whose past efforts contributed to this achievement.
AAPA Annual Census On-lineThe 2008 AAPA Census is now available to be completed on-line. AAPA's Annual Census is the only survey that is distributed to all PAs, and the data is the world's primary source of information on the PA profession. Please take 15 minutes to complete this year's census. AAPA will award a prize to three randomly selected participants who fill out the census either on-line or by mail.
Retail-based Clinics Attract Attention of Industry GiantsSome of the country's largest retailers, such as Wal-Mart and CVS, are investing in store-based walk-in clinics. Industry watchers predict that the number of walk-in retail medical clinics will grow to nearly 8,000 nationwide by 2011, and earn an estimated $4.5 billion. To read more, click here.
