STATE STATUTE REGULATIONS ALABAMA
The board may grant a temporary license to an applicant who meets qualifications for licensure except that the applicant has not taken the PANCE exam for the first time or the applicant has taken the exam for the first time and is awaiting the results. Temporary license valid for one year from date issued or until results of exam are available or until the board makes a final decision on applicant's request for licensure, whichever comes first. Temporary licensees may not prescribe nor be allowed to practice without direct, on-site physician supervision (these restrictions may be waived by the board).
Code of Alabama §34-24-293The board may grant a temporary certificate to an applicant who meets the qualifications for certification as a physician assistant except that the applicant has not yet taken the Physician Assistant National Certification Examination (PANCE) or the applicant has taken the PANCE and is awaiting the results. A temporary certificate is valid:
- For one year from the date of issue, or
- Until the results of an applicant's examination are available, or
- Until the board makes a final decision on the applicant's request for certification as a physician assistant, whichever comes first.
- Physician assistants granted temporary certificates will not be granted prescriptive privileges, allowed to practice without direct, on site physician supervision, or allowed to practice in a remote practice site.
- The board, in its discretion, may waive the requirement(s) in paragraph (d) of this rule.

Board may issue temporary license to applicant who meets all other qualifications and is eligible to take next certifying exam. Applicant who has previously failed the NCCPA exam is ineligible. Temporary licensee must practice at same work site as supervising physician; may not prescribe controlled medications.

Applicant must prove he has applied to take exam and has requested results sent to PAC. Failure to pass exam presumed if results not provided within 30 days after scores released.

Graduate licensure may be considered by the board when all requirements have been met with the exception of a baccalaureate degree. Plan for completion of the baccalaureate degree must be submitted and approved by the board. ILLINOIS
Department shall issue temporary certificate to applicant who has completed an approved PA program and submitted evidence of admission to NCCPA exam. Temporary certificate expires when NCCPA certification received or 15 months have elapsed, whichever comes first. Non-renewable. PA cannot practice on temporary certificate following notice of failing the exam.

SOUTH CAROLINA
The board may issue a limited license to an applicant who meets qualifications for licensure except the applicant has not yet successfully completed the NCCPA exam. The applicant must have never previously failed two consecutive NCCPA certifying examinations and has registered for, or intends to register to take the next offering of, the NCCPA examination.
A limited license is not renewable and is valid only until the results of a limited licensee's two consecutive NCCPA exams are reported to the baord. When a limited licensee has failed two consecutive NCCPA exams, or has failed one exam and does not take the next offering of the exam or, after appliying for a limited license fails to register for the next offering of the exam, the limited license is immediately void and the applicant is no longer eligible for further limited licensure.
The supervising physician of a limited licensee must be physically present on the premises at all times when the limited licensee is performing any task.

Board has authority to issue a non-renewable, limited certificate, valid only until results of next exam are received by board, to a graduate of an accredited PA program who has never taken the NCCPA exam but is registered (or intends to register) for the next exam and who has appeared with his sponsoring physician before a board member. Temporary certification may be issued if applicant is applying for first-time certification in Vermont and applicant has graduated from board-approved PA program and applicant is eligible and has applied to sit for the first NCCPA examination. Noncertified PAs who are issued a temporary license must sit for and obtain passing score on next exam offered following graduation. Temporary license not available for applicant who has taken and failed exam.

Wisconsin Statutes §448.04(f)
PA may apply for temporary certification if:

The board may issue a temporary license to any person who successfully completes an approved program but has not passed a proficiency examination. To allow the opportunity to take the next available exam, any temporary license shall be issued for a period not to exceed 1 year.

PA who has graduated from accredited program may be granted temporary license to allow him to take next available certification exam. Temporary license valid for no longer than one year.
