The Joint Commission (formerly known as The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, or JCAHO, or "Jayco") accredits more than 27,000 health care facilities in the country including ambulatory care clinics, home health agencies, behavioral health centers, hospitals, and long term care facilities. The organization develops standards that impact physician assistant practices. Knowing what Commission surveyors are looking for and how they score facilities is important, as the Joint Commission standards by and large guide the way hospitals and other health care facilities function in all areas.
Representatives of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) attend many of the conferences and meetings sponsored by the Joint Commission. To access highlights from these meetings, link through the table of contents below. If you are an AAPA member and would like information about how you can participate in the Academy's work with the Joint Commission, or if you have comments about this site, contact the AAPA through the Comments and Recommendations link.
The Academy produces another excellent resource for information about PA practice and Joint Commission standards. This book, Physician Assistants and Hospital Practice, includes detailed information about Joint Commission standards and policies, along with other information on credentialing PAs, a sample credentialing form, and much more. A copy of this book can found online at www.aapa.org/gandp/pro-issues.html#hosp.
