AAPA's government affairs staff regularly reviews all state CME requirements. At this time fifteen states do require CME in certain areas. Please see chart below

Specific CME Requirements: State-by-State Review (updated 11/13/2006)

State 
CME Requirement
Florida
  • 2 hours in domestic violence every six years, or every third license renewal
  • 1 hour course in HIV/AIDS to be completed prior to first license renewal
  • 2 hours in prevention of medical errors every renewal period
  • Prescribing PAs must complete a minimum of 10 hours of CME in specialty area of supervising physician biennially (these hours may apply towards 100 hour requirement)
Georgia
  • 3 hours in practice-specific pharmaceuticals
  • Starting in the 2009-2010 renewal period, 10 out of the 40 required hours of CME must be in supervising physician's specialty
Iowa
  • For PAs that treat children or adults: 2 hours in identification and reporting of child or dependent adult abuse completed within 5 years prior to licensure. Training May be completed through separate courses or in 1 combined 2-hour course on identifying and reporting child and dependent adult abuse. Course(s) must be approved by the Iowa department of public health abuse education review panel.
Kentucky
  • 2 hours in HIV/AIDS every 10 years
Maryland
  • PAs must complete a course on the needs of the terminally ill for certification renewal
  • PAs authorized to prescribe must show proof of 8 Category I CME hours completed in Pharmacology
Massachusetts
  • At least 4 hours of required CME must be in pharmacology or pharmacokinetics
Mississippi
  • PAs authorized to prescribe controlled substances must show proof of 10 of the required CME hours in prescribing of medication with an emphasis on controlled medications
Nevada
  • 4 hours in the medical consequences of an act of terrorism that involves the use of a weapon of mass destruction completed within 2 years of initial licensure.
  • PAs attending CME class on geriatrics and gerontology are entitled to receive twice the hours actually spent in the course.
Ohio

In order to apply for a certificate to prescribe PAs must complete:

  • 30 hours of pharmacokinetic pharmacology CME withing the past 3 years
  • 15 hours of fiscal and ethical implication pharmacology within the past 3 years
  • 20 hours of clinical pharmacology
  • PAs authorized to prescribe must complete 12 hours of CME biennially in pharmacology
Oklahoma
  • 1 hour every year on the topic of substance abuse
Oregon
  • PAs licensed after January, 2006 must complete approved pain management course within 2 years
South Carolina
  • For Schedule III-V prescriptive privileges, PAs must complete a 15 hour course in the appropriate prescribing of controlled substances.
  • PAs delegated controlled prescribing privileges must complete 4 hours biennially in prescribing controlled substances
South Dakota
  • Renewal request must be accompanied by proof of 30 postgraduate hours in family medicine approved by the board within 12 months
Washington
  • All PAs must demonstrate completion of 4 hours of AIDS education prior to initially obtaining licensure
West Virginia
  • To maintain prescribing privileges, a PA must complete 10 hours of CME in rational drug therapy every certification period

 

AAPA's Topic-specific CME Series offers recordings of CME sessions that can be used to earn one hour of Category I CME credit in the designated topic. To earn Category I credit, you must complete a post-test, available on-line only, and score at least 70% correct.
