The
Treasures of San Francisco
1:00-5:00
p.m. Saturday, May 27 and
8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30
The
list of treasures in San Francisco reads like an all-star vacation
checklist: The Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Painted
Ladies, the cable cars — and the list goes on and on. Visitors
to
San Francisco are never far from one of the many attractions that
make this coastal town the jewel of the west. San Francisco’s
49
square miles create a colorful combo of steep hills, picturesque
houses, boats, summer fog, trendy boutiques, and cosmopolitan
cafes. Come and discover the sights and sounds that have made San
Francisco a legendary city!
Alcatraz:
“The Rock”
1:00-5:00
p.m. Saturday, May 27 and
8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 31
Last pictured in the thriller, The Rock, Alcatraz was once home to
some of the nation’s most infamous criminals. A ferry ride across
the wind- and fog-swept bay to the island provides beautiful views
of the hills of San Francisco. On the island, an informative audio
tour will guide you through the cells of the prison while you listen
to interviews with former prisoners and guards. The island’s many
features – early military fortifi cations, the West Coast’s
fi rst and
oldest operating lighthouse, gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and
bay views beyond compare – have been preserved to make it one
of
the most fascinating sites to visit in California.
The
Sites of Sausalito
10:00
a.m.-3:00 p.m. Monday, May 29
Located just north of the Golden Gate Bridge on the southeastern
tip of Marin County, Sausalito is one of the premier destinations
for visitors to San Francisco and the Bay Area. After riding up the
winding roads through the Marin Headland, you will walk through
the redwood forest of Muir Woods. Led by a professional tour
guide, you will be awed by the sheer size of the Sequoia trees and
calmed by the quiet waters of Redwood Creek. Incorporated in
1893, Sausalito was named by 18th Century Spanish explorers for
the “little willow” trees (saucelito) found on the banks
of its streams.
You will spend the rest of the tour browsing the many unique
boutiques and art galleries of the town and can stop for lunch on
your own.

Your Senses in Napa Valley

8:00
a.m.-4:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 31
To the Wappo Indians who fi rst inhabited the valley, “Napa”
meant
land of plenty. Spawning salmon fi lled the waterways, clouds of
migrating waterfowl darkened the skies, and the valley fl oor served
as home to wildcats, elk, black bear, and grizzlies. Wild grapes
also grew in abundance, but it took early settlers to recognize the
valley’s potential for cultivating wine grapes. Today, Napa Valley
is
home to more than 260 wineries. During this day-long tour, you
will learn the art of winemaking as you tour two very different
wineries featuring wine (possibly Frog’s Leap or Opus One, subject
to change) and champagne (possibly Domaine Chandon, subject
to change). By the end of the day, not only will you be able to
distinguish between crisp, dry, and buttery wines, but you will leave
Napa with a broader sense of why this is one of the world’s most
recognized wine-producing regions. The tour includes lunch at a
Napa restaurant overlooking the countryside. $50 will go to the PA
Foundation’s mission to advance health care through philanthropy.

9:00
a.m.-3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 28
You will enjoy a drive across the Golden Gate Bridge through the
rolling hills of Marin County to Sonoma, one of California’s worldfamous
wine-growing regions. The day begins with a stop at one of
Sonoma’s most popular vineyards (possibly Kunde Estate, Benziger
Family Vineyard, or Viansa Winery – subject to change). You’ll
enjoy a narrated tour, then you will have the opportunity to sample
some of the fl avors of Sonoma. The next stop will be General
Mariano Vallejo’s home. Arrested in 1846 during he Great Bear
Flag revolt that created the short-lived California Republic, Vallejo
became an integral part of the Sonoma wine country by building
military barracks on what is today referred to as Sonoma Plaza.
The tour concludes with time for shopping and lunch on your own
in Sonoma Plaza. $50 will go to the PA Foundation’s mission to
advance health care through philanthropy.
