| Airport
& Ground Transportation |
McCarren Airport is the main airport serving Las
Vegas. It is located one mile from the Strip, 3.5 miles from the
Convention Center, and 5 miles from downtown Las Vegas. The Las
Vegas Airport is among the 10 busiest airports in the world, based
on the amount of passenger activity, serving more than 60 carriers
and averaging as many as 840 flights a day. They offer direct flights
to more than 60 cities. The airport code for Las Vegas is LAS.
All taxis are metered. There is a $1.20 additional
charge for all trips originating at the airport. A variety of shuttle/limousine
services are available at McCarren; they are located on the north
and west sides of baggage claim. Check the McCarran Web site, http://mccarran.com,
for further details.
Once you are in the city, taxis can only pick up
from hotels and restaurants. They cannot pick you up if you try
to hail them from the street.
Las Vegas offers a public transportation system
called Citizens Area Transit (CAT), comprised of 305 buses that
serve 49 routes. Many crosstown bus routes stop, start, and transfer
through the Downtown Transportation Center, as well as the south
end of the Strip (South Strip Transfer Terminal). Adult cash fare
is $1.25, except for Strip routes, which are $2.00. Transfers are
free. The 301 Strip route runs every 7 minutes, depending on the
time of day. The Las Vegas Strip Trolleys run from 9:30 a.m. to
1:30 a.m. Fare is $1.65, and exact change is required. Trolleys
run about every 15 minutes. Stops are at the following properties:
Stratosphere, Circus-Circus, Slots of Fun, Stardust, Fashion Show
Mall, Mirage, Jockey Club, New York New York, Excalibur, Mandalay
Bay, Tropicana, MGM Grand, Bally's, Imperial Palace, Harrah's, Riviera,
Wet 'N Wild, Sahara, and Las Vegas Hilton. Ride in a bus mimicking
a San Francisco-style cable car on old-fashioned wooden-slat seats
with wrought iron and brass accents.
Currently under construction, the Las Vegas Monorail will take visitors across the Strip - from the MGM Grand to the Venetian and across to the Convention Center and the Hilton. Tickets will be moderately priced, and a variety of options are available for anything from a one-way trip to a 72-hour unlimited use pass. Delays in production have caused the original debut date of the Monorail (March 2004) to be pushed back to summer 2004. The Monorail may not be open for our conference - we will post updates as soon as we have them.
